The General Missionary Baptist
Convention (GMBC) of Colorado was previously known as the General
Missionary Baptist Association (GMBA) of Colorado. It had
it's beginning in 1946 when a group of dedicated ministers and others met at
the St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church to organize an association of
baptist churches.
The Pastor of St. Stephen at the time was
the late rev. J. L. Rollerson, who was elected Moderator of the Association.
Other officers elected at the organizational meeting were Mrs. Fannie
Miller, President of the Senior Women's Auxiliary (Friendship Baptist Church
of Colorado Springs), Mrs. Lila Quinn, President of the Sunday School and
BTU Congress (Friendship Baptist Church), Rev. D. S. Jordon, Financial
Secretary/Treasurer (Eight Street Baptist Church, Pueblo), Mr. Shelby Adams,
Recording Secretary (St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, Denver). A
complete list of all officers elected at this meeting is not available.
The Association was blessed with dedicated
leaders and had a positive impact upon the community. Some of the
forerunners were the late Rev. C.A. Miller, organizer and Pastor of the
Friendship Missionary Baptist Church of Colorado Springs, and was later as
the Pastor of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, Denver, the late Rev.
John T. Walker, organizer and Pastor of Union Baptist Church, Denver, and
later was Moderator of the Association. Other pastors who served as
moderators were the late rev. W.H. Mitchell, Eight Street Baptist Church,
Pueblo, the late Rev. T. J. Marigna, Friendship Baptist Colorado Springs,
Rev. J.O. Stephen, former Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church, LaJunta,
Colorado.
The Association remained alive throughout
the years and has continued to grow. There are many outstanding achievements
and many events of special importance that are not mentioned in this brief
history. However, we are grateful and indebted to the faithful soldiers
Christ who had the courage to undertake such a difficult task. We are now
recipients of the fruit of the their labor.
In July 1975, the association became the
General Missionary Baptist Convention of Colorado. All Association
officers retained their positions and Rev. J.O. Stephen became the first
Convention President. At the Annual Session in July 1976, Fred Hopson, Jr. ,
Pastor of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, was elected President of
the Convention and served until July 1983.
As result of Rev. Hopson's Dedication and
hard labor, the Convention made many accomplishments. It became a moving
spiritual force in the State of Colorado, and is destined for higher heights
with continued spiritual Leadership. The Convention is divided into two
districts --Salem and Pike's Peak. The Salem District is made up of Denver
area Churches and the Pike's Peak District is a representation of churches
in the Southern region of the State.
On July 22,1983, the 37th Annual Business
Session was Called to order by President Hopson. rev. E.R. Johnson, Pastor
of Friendship Baptist Church, Colorado Springs, was elected President of the
Convention. Rev. E.R. Johnson served from July, 1983 to July, 1988. In July

The Officers and members of the Convention
believe nothing is impossible with God and will continue to move forward in
Kingdom building.
